I personally have mixed emotions about prooflike gold coins. Due to the fact that gold is a soft metal, the surfaces tend to easily pick up marks, nicks and scratches and these tend to be strongly amplified by deep, reflective fields. Unless a Prooflike gold coin is a Gem, it tends to have a scruffy appearance and may have compromised eye appeal as a result.

Central banks and the International Monetary Fund play an important role in the gold price. At the end of 2004 central banks and official organizations held 19 percent of all above-ground gold as official gold reserves. The Washington Agreement on Gold (WAG), which dates from September 1999, limits gold sales by its members (Europe, United States, Japan, Australia, Bank for International Settlements and the International Monetary Fund) to less than 400 tonnes a year. European central banks, such as the Bank of England and Swiss National Bank, have been key sellers of gold over this period.

A second big category of damage type we see on coins is fingerprints. The oils and acids present on one's hands can damage coins if left on the surface of the coin for an extended time. Initially, they can cause a fingerprint pattern toned area that is unattractive and lowers the value and grade of the coin. Left unattended, these oils and acids can eventually etch the surface of the coin making the fingerprint permanent. Even handling coins by their rims still allows the dangerous compounds onto the rims of the coins. Using a pair of soft cotton gloves when handling raw coins helps protect all three surfaces of the coins. Make sure you get a pair of thin gloves so that you can still feel the coin. Bulky work gloves make it harder to handle small items and increases the risk of dropping the coin.

Whether you are buying or selling coins, you can increase your advantage when dealing with coin dealers by understanding how things work behind the scenes. One of the biggest problems I see, as an observer of the coin collecting marketplace, is the wide gulf between what the average consumer expects from a coin dealer, and what the average coin dealer believes he should provide to the consumer. The majority of these differences boil down to trust. The average consumer thinks he can trust the coin dealer to give him an honest appraisal and pay a fair price for the coins he is selling. The average dealer feels it is right to pay the lowest price he can for the coins, to maximize his profit, and that it is up to the consumer to do his homework.

If you buy gold coins on Ebay using Pay Pal, your item may be insured meaning you get your money back if it never ships or is a fake. You can learn more about Pay Pal's insurance here. This helps with peace of mind and I would make sure your auction is covered. Another way to get insurance and guarantee peace of mind: Ask the seller to prove the authenticity of their gold. Maybe they can provide you of a receipt from when they bought the gold. In general, it's good to keep receipts and keep track of your purchases so you can prove their authenticity.

U.S. National Bank Notes or U.S. Federal Reserve Bank Notes? The difference between 1929 series National Bank Notes and Federal Reserve Bank Notes is rather subtle, as each is called "National Currency" above the portrait and each bears a brown Treasury seal, but they can easily be distinguished by the bank name to the left of the portrait. If it is from a bank entitled "The Federal Reserve Bank of" and is from one of the 12 District Federal Reserve Banks, it is a Federal Reserve Bank Note. National Bank Notes are from other banks with titles such as "The First National Bank of" or the "National Bank of" or the "National Trust and Savings Bank of" or other such titles.

A final area of coin investing to consider are the bullion coins, especially coins that are traded at close to spot price (as opposed to Proof Silver Eagles and other premium U.S. Mint offerings.) With the growth of China and India and the likelihood that they will become "superpowers" within the next generation, all precious metals are expected to rise over the long term. Copper, in particular, is expected to boom compared to current prices.
